What Can You Upload Dna From Ancestry

In this Upload-Download Series, nosotros'll embrace each major vendor:

  • How to download raw data files from the vendor
  • How to upload raw data files to the vendor, if possible
  • Other mainstream vendors where you tin can upload this vendor's files

Uploading TO Beginnings

This function is like shooting fish in a barrel with Ancestry because Ancestry doesn't accept whatsoever other vendor'southward files. At that place is no ability to upload TO Ancestry. You have to test with Ancestry if you want Dna results from Ancestry.

Downloading FROM Ancestry

In order to upload your Beginnings autosomal Deoxyribonucleic acid file to another testing vendor, or GedMatch, for either matching or ethnicity, you'll need to first download the file from Ancestry. This doesn't in any way bear on your DNA matches at Beginnings. Yous're just downloading a re-create of the raw data file.

Stride 1

Sign in to your account at Beginnings and click on the DNA Results Summary link.

Footstep 2

Click on the Settings gear, at the far upper right-mitt corner of the summary page, just below your Beginnings user ID.

Step 3

Whorl way to the bottom and click on the link for "Download Raw Dna Data."

Step 4

Enter your countersign and click on "I Understand," after reading of form.

So click "Confirm."

Pace 5

Ancestry will send an email to the e-mail address where yous are registered with Ancestry. Check your inbox for that electronic mail.

Waiting…waiting.

Still waiting…

If the e-postal service doesn't make it shortly, cheque your spam binder. If y'all've changed email addresses, check to be sure your new one is registered with Beginnings. That's on the same Settings folio. If all else fails, request the email again.

Stride 6

Ahhh, it'southward finally here.

Click on the green "Confirm Information Download" and exercise not shut the window.

Pace 7

Next, click on the green "Download DNA Data."

Yous'll see the post-obit confirmation screen along with the downloaded file at the bottom.

Footstep eight

At the lesser of the page, above, if you're on a PC, you lot'll meet the name of the zipped file.

The file name will exist "dna-data-2021-07-31" where the engagement is the date you lot downloaded the file. I would suggest adding the word Ancestry to the front when you save the file on your arrangement.

Most vendors want an unopened zip file, so if y'all want to open your file, first copy it to another name. Otherwise, y'all'll take to download once again.

That'south it, you're done!

Ancestry Deoxyribonucleic acid File Uploads to Other Vendors

Ancestry testing falls into two different categories. V1 tests taken before May of 2016 and V2, the electric current version equally of Baronial 2021 which includes tests taken afterward May 2016. Tests processed during May 2016 could be either version. However, the major vendors have both files, and so the version no longer matters.

The divergence betwixt V1 and V2 files is that Ancestry inverse the fries they use to test and different DNA positions are tested, resulting in a file of a different format.

Non all vendors accept uploads, but you lot can upload your Ancestry DNA file, equally follows:

From below to >>>>>>>>>>> Family unit Tree DNA Accepts ** MyHeritage Accepts*** 23andMe Accepts* GedMatch Accepts
Ancestry V1 and V2 Yes Yes No Yes

*Note that 23andMe in 2018 immune a ane-fourth dimension upload from Ancestry, but people who uploaded results did not receive matches from 23andMe. You lot need to examination at 23andMe.

**Note that the upload to Family Tree DNA and matching is gratuitous, but advanced tools including the chromosome browser and ethnicity require a $nineteen unlock fee. That fee is less expensive than retesting.

***MyHeritage provides free matching and basic tools. You'll need either a $29 unlock or a total subscription to utilise all of the MyHeritage advanced Deoxyribonucleic acid and genealogy tools. You tin upload your DNA file here, and attempt the subscription for free, here.

Testing and Upload Strategy

My recommendation, if you lot test at Ancestry, is to upload your Dna file to MyHeritage, Family Tree Deoxyribonucleic acid, and GedMatch.

I wrote step-by-step upload instructions for:

  • MyHeritage, click here
  • Family unit Tree DNA, click here
  • Ancestry, click here

Accept fun!
